Best Customer Service Practices Include the Human Touch

Clever Way for A Customer to Make A Point!

Are businesses ever allowed to provide mediocre customer service? Is it okay to leave customers hanging on a phone tree for more than five minutes? Are there industries that should provide excellent service more so than others?

The answer to all three questions above is a resounding NO-at least that’s my $0.02 worth. But, unfortunately, we all experience poor service on a daily basis as customers even from blue-chip enterprises to boot.

If you are a small business owner you are probably cringing at this thought because YOU know that your success lies in the quality of your customer service. So then why do we allow large conglomerates to do that to us all the time? Why do we still give these companies our precious dollars, especially when we expect more out of own business services?

Today I experienced such an experience. Unfortunately, I am dealing with medical issues associated with a loved one. As such, I had to wait for four hours in a hospital lobby while a family member had tests conducted. Since I was just sitting there I had hoped that I could log on to the Internet and quietly get some work completed. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they had a daily wi-fi access code, however, I soon found out that the system does not allow access to Apple devices only PCs. Say WHAT???

PHONE TREES DRIVE YOU UP A TREE!

I think I'll Skip This Place.

This wasn’t a life-threatening situation and I could do other work offline, but this example just got me thinking about all the other times that I’ve been frustrated by poor customer service. I attend dozens of small business connector meetings and each always stresses the importance of guest relations. So why is excellent customer service applicable to small owners and not large conglomerates?

A HUMAN VOICE GOES A LONG WAY IN CUSTOMER SERVICE

I would rather do anything than call my satellite provider, healthcare company or phone service. I know that when I call them I’ll be sitting there for a while. Phone trees that put you in sequence are annoying as are the companies that don’t provide any voice connection like Facebook. Most tech companies now provide email customer service and hide their main phone numbers. I don’t care how great you are in answering email support questions, yes I’m including Google, in this rant as well. There are times when a human voice is the best possible service a company can provide.

What companies drive you crazy with poor support and what companies do you think deserve some applause. Do tell.

How to Best Use Google Plus

What do you think about this new communication platform? It is a hit or miss?

In social media circles Google’s new social networking platform Google Plus is the most talked about new shiny toy. With Google Plus, people with gmail email accounts can organize their circle of friends in logical groupings and easily video chat with 10 people or less at the same time.

Many of its functions are similar to Facebook, so early adopters can understand its practical functionality.  For instance, you have status streams of recent posts from your friends on Google + and it easily allows for sharing of photos and video too.

If you haven’t received your invite yet to to Google +, don’t worry you will soon. I’m sure its Google intention to have everyone in the world on their social platform. Just wait, your invitation is forthcoming.

I’ve been experimenting with it over the last few days and I still am not sure of all its bells and whistles. So, with that, I’ve interviewed two social media strategists, Stacey Soleil and Darin McClure, about their views regarding Google Plus and that interview is below.  Enjoy and let me know what you think.

Social Media Day What A Success!

Thank you Orange County Register for hosting a Mashable Social Media Day event.

How did you celebrate  #Mashable’s Social Media Day? I celebrated it with my local social media club, Social Media Mastermind of Orange County (SMMOC) at the Orange County Register. For those of you who know me, you know that I love to support journalists and their publications, therefore, it was a win-win for me to be at the OCRegister.

Kudos to everyone who was involved at this local gathering. Employees at the paper, like Kevin Sablan, did an amazing job of lining up speakers, equipment, parking access and food vendors. The content that was provided was definitely “remark-able” and hopefully, a good time was had by all.

YEAH FOR SOCIAL MEDIA DAY

To help give you a flavor of what our day was like, I put some pictures together and produced a short video. The best thing about this day is the fact if you couldn’t make it to any event – you could still participate by following on the dozens of twitter hashtags that cropped up representing social activities throughout the world. It’s now becoming one of my favorite days of the year.

Enjoy!

How To Land the Right Job After College

Grads: The World is at Your Feet...Copyright All rights reserved by Albert Kenyani Inima

The headline of “How To Land the Right Job After College” may be a bit loaded I know. Landing jobs are difficult for everyone, no matter when you graduated or will graduate. But, I do feel that recent college grads and soon to be college grads can get hired in the positions that they have always dreamed about.  By following a few of these suggestions below, any aspiring employee can get closer to the job of their choice or at least assist in job search.

How do I know? What makes me an expert on this topic?

I’m no job education expert, but I am an experienced executive who has worked at major corporations. I also am skilled in job search, due to a professional program I recently attended thanks to a former employer.  And I often speak at local colleges, so I do have a sense about what college students are feeling these days.  So for those reasons and those reasons alone, I strongly suggest you read on and heed some of my sage advice in this matter.  Here we go.

JOB SEARCH TO DO LIST

(1) When asked what type of job you are looking for..NEVER NEVER NEVER answer this way: “I’ll take anything really, I just need a job.” This is a wrong answer. Go immediately to Point No. 2.

(2). Did you know that 97 percent of all jobs are acquired through networking and people you know? That’s a true fact.  Therefore, if you don’t know what kind of job you want or what company you would like to work for…people like me can’t help you. I have no idea what you majored in or what your passions are. This answer hurts you more than it can ever help you. Never be vague. At least give us something to work with…

Some things that you could say if you aren’t preciously sure of what you are looking are answers like these…”I’m interested in an entry-level position at a national hotel chain (insert area here) and I would like to stay in this area.”  Or “I would like to work for a mortgage company and I will relocate for the best opportunity.” Or “I interested in pursuing a career in the action sports industry. I’d like to work in marketing and promote apparel lines and will relocate if necessary.”

Can you see how these answers are a major improvement? It helps give people a better sense of how they can help you. And people really want to help you. Heck, in this tight economy, everyone knows that we need to help each other.  It’s a given.

(3.) Now that you know what kind of position you want, you need to ask everyone and anyone to help you connect with the right companies and the right people who can hire you.  In job search, shyness isn’t allowed. You’ve got to overcome your job fright. Never be embarrassed when you meet people to immediately ask them if they know anyone in the area of your job search.  This applies to your parent’s friends who come over, your teachers, your pastors, your music teacher, your grocery clerk, your bank teller and your doorman. Heck, even ask people you meet in the elevator. Well, that may be a bit too much, but heck how can it hurt. You have to solicit for your job. I mean I’m constantly having my door bell rung with kids asking me to buy cookies, magazine subscriptions, or wrapping paper to support their school drives. If you could do it then, you can do it now. Say hello and then go into your job spiel…Hi I’m So and So. I’m graduating this month and I am looking for a position in organic farming. Do you know anyone in that field that I could talk to?  Again, don’t be shy. Heck, email me and ask me for help. I’m now a connection for you. Ask people on your Facebook page. Put it out there. We’re here to help.

(4.) If you’re still perplexed about what you want to do…stop right now for I have some homework for you. Write down the five companies where you would like to work. Remember once you get hired, that company is going to grab 40 or more hours of your time a week, so why not work at a company you actually want to work for! Try to work at those companies first.

And then add those companies to your job speech…”Hi I’m a recent graduate of BLANK and I’ve majored in engineering. I am looking for an entry-level position at one of these companies GE, Boeing, Apple, Microsoft or Northrup. Do you know anyone at one of these companies? And if so, would you mind contacting them on my behalf?”

You Should Feel Like A Winner When You Land Your Job

(5.) Be confident and don’t be desperate. You’re in charge of your destiny and your search. You do not have to take any job that comes around. First go after the companies on your target list. Do it. I don’t want you to wake up one morning and regret that you never worked at Facebook. You don’t know until you try. And once you get hired…remember to keep networking for you need to always be ready for your next great job…even if that’s a promotion at the same company.

So go get that job of your dreams. Or least one that is a close match. You have invested a great deal of time and money into yourself going after that college education.

That’s why you deserve to work at a company that you want as well one that wants you.

If you ever need any encouragement, please contact me. I’d love to pass on more words to help you feel like “Rocky.”

Higher Education Is Everywhere

Affordable Learning is Never Out of Reach

Right now thousands of college students are cramming for final examinations.  As these students look forward to a break from learning as they head off into summer or full time work, I am reminded of the fact that learning is available to anyone, anywhere and at anytime. For me, today that’s what I am doing. I’m getting some higher education by attending a one-day conference about my area of expertise. I’m at one of the higher education institutions, Chapman University in Orange. I’m here with over 250 others (all ages) learning about new methods to grow business online. It’s called Wordcamp OC.

We are in newish classrooms here and its an amazing setting for learning.  Each session is being live streamed over Ustream and thus open to anyone with an Internet connection. Just by clicking this link http://2011.oc.wordcamp.org/ you can see the classes and topics. Although it cost me $40 for the day, it can be yours for free. This was an investment was well worth my while because the information I will glean from today’s conference will make me sharper in my business.

If you want to follow exactly what is transpiring today, you can follow this blog, The WPCandy WordCamp. Here, you’ll see TheFrosty’s (organizer of WordCampLA) journey through the day.

There's nothing like going back to school for going back to school.

Me, I’ll be sending posts as I see fit, but I’m super excited to spend the day with other like-minded people passionate about web communication. But, if WordPress topics don’t interest you, there are sessions to help you get sales leads, on building business plans and copyright laws.

Check it out and I’m so happy to be here again. Join me won’t you?

Yes You Can Start A Blog

Blogger Cindy Ronzoni says, "I can't help but smile every time I finish a piece. Still can't believe we can have personal voices on the web." - goofy self portrait

When I was in between permanent work positions a few years ago, I had the urge to try out blogging.  As a PR pro, I had worked with bloggers, and thus, had some semblance as to what they did.  I really had no idea how to start one and what it was all about…that was in 2008. Now, four years later I’m thriving as a blogger and can’t envision a day when I won’t have an active blog or two.

I love blogging! I can’t begin to tell you about the personal freedom it has given me. At first, I didn’t know what to write. I mean, prior to 2008, all my writing and voice had been exhibited through corporate communication efforts like statements, press releases and/or pitches. I had never been able to interject my personal opinion or beliefs in anything I had ever done except diaries and journals. I always represented the company with anything I had ever written.

Thanks to a friend who got me all set up with my first WordPress blog, I was ready to start exploring who I was and what I stood for. It was hard to start and I found myself often staring at a black screen. I felt like so “naked.” I didn’t know what I could write and was scared about having a voice. Some of  the thoughts I had were these questions:  Would I write something that would cause controversy? Would anyone care what I had to say? Could I even do this?

Bloggging is Alive and Well in Colleges Credit: Cindy Ronzoni

I fumbled a bit at the start, but now I have hit my stride transforming and refining my content over time. For you see, the more you practice at something the better you get.

JUST DO IT

I love having my own voice on the web.  And that’s my wish for you too. I want to encourage you start blogging today. Put those fears aside and just do it. If you don’t know how to begin…send me a note or check out WordPress.com or Blogger.com or heck, even tumblr.com is a fantastic place to start. It’s so much easier now setting up websites…you can do it!

BLOGGING IS THRIVING

Recently, I experienced the perfect trifecta. I was absolutely in my glory for I was able to mix my thirst for news, my love of blogging and passion for teaching college-aged students in one full swoop. I taught a college journalism class where the students blogged for their homework. At first I wondered how they were doing finding “their voice” on the web.  I also was curious about what that age group had to say…what drove them and where their passions lie.  I let them write about something that they were interested in…they had full reign to write whatever they wanted. The only thing I required was that they would email me their posts. I was blown away by the “voices” I heard back.

They covered non-profits. Several told me about their favorite hockey teams and how they hoped they’d make the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Some moved me when they spoke about how dance affects their lives. Others shared their souls about being confused about their future. And most wanted to make things “right” in this world.  They had deep and heart-felt suggestions. They care and they have voices that need to be heard.

And the same is true for you.

Start blogging today, but be careful – for it does become addicting.

Let me know how it goes for you – please send me your first post so I can congratulate you properly and keep encouraging you to write on!

Happy Blogging,

Cindy

Doing Good Business

Nice conference freebie for the Real Estate market

I wanted to briefly comment on the importance of choosing the perfect tchotchkes for industry conventions. Selecting the right bauble to represent your brand is crucial for it is by these knickknacks that they will remember you — that is if the product is one that is useful or kitschy.

At today’s real estate conference, there were the usual tchotchkes present – the lip balm, key chains, grocery bag, pens and flash drives. And of course, the branded water.

One trinket that stood out was the tape measure featured in this blog. Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate handed them out to those who stopped by their table. The tape measure is useful to Realtors and the fact that they made them to connect easily to your belt loop made it impressive.

I know tape measures have been made at nauseum in this field, but who doesn’t need one. It’s a staple of every household. And it was perfect match for the brand Better Homes and Gardens.

It could have also worked for Lowe’s. Nice work Sherry Chris, President and CEO of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Lowe's is on the Mark Working with Realtors

Attending the Agent Reboot OC conference I was extremely impressed to learn about how the global home improvement retailer Lowe’s offers a specific program for Realtors. Lowe’s has partnered with National Association of Realtors to provide free marketing tools and exclusive access to offers on Lowe’s products.

For those Realtors who sign up for the program, they receive a 5 percent discount on Lowe’s gift cards, as well exclusive offers and access to Lowe’s Commercial options.

This program is absolutely brilliant on behalf of Lowe’s. I remember when I bought my home I received many valuable coupons from local retailers. I needed to buy food and Von’s offered a discount.  I needed to buy hardware and Lowe’s gave me money off my purchase. I loved those discounts!

The Lowe’s program provides turnkey solutions for Realtors to connect with clients. And who doesn’t love that. That’s good business.

Networking in Foreign Lands

Attending Agent Reboot with my RE friends

THE SOCIAL REALTY

Today I’ve embarked on a new experiment. I’m attending a social media convention called Agent Reboot OC. This gathering is geared toward realtors and although, I know virtually nothing about this industry, I was wise enough to examine their agenda to see that they were presenting informative topics. For a mere $49 admission price and $9 for parking, I’m learning about mobile tools, Facebook tips, lead conversion and meeting an entire new group of people.

For over 20 years I’ve attended conventions and workshops involving the entertainment, blogging or casual gaming industries. Here I’m totally networking out of my normal wheelhouse. It’s quite interesting walking through the hall and looking at sponsors – Lowe’s, Zillow, Better Homes and Gardens, Yahoo and even UPS.  Good thing I love learning about new things!

Yes, you may be scratching you head as to why I would be attending as a PR pro, but I wanted to learn more about local promotion and advertising and realtors are among the best at promoting local. So it was well worth my time.

I must say that I’m not walking into this conference cold. In addition to the interesting topics, I do have a few new social media friends who are here in attendance. That made my decision a bit more easier to attend.

Realtors Investing in the Latest Tools To Optimize Business

MOBILE IS KING

The main point of this blog is that the reason why I am here is greatly due to Robert “Bob” Watson, the founder of the social media club I attend, Social Media Mastermind of Orange County (SMMOC). SMMOC is just one of Bob’s side passions, he actually is an accomplished and well-known consultant at First Team Real Estate. By attending the SMMOC meetings I’ve been rubbing elbows with over 20 real estate professionals. And I must say most of the discussions are triggered by them for they truly are embracing new media in their professions. They video tape open houses, list new properties on foursquare and have thriving blogs.

What am I learning so far at Agent Reboot?

  • That iPads are a going to be a must for business.
  • That we should rethink our Facebook business pages
  • Mobile will be king in 2013.
  • Text is important.
  • And that we all need to produce more video.

That’s just after two hours and I’ll write more later.  Below is a photo of fellow SMMOC member Stacey Harmon addressing the group on Facebook Business Optimization tips. She runs a company called PixelCoaching. Visit her site today to learn the differences between personal and business profiles/pages on Facebook.

Extending Customer Service Through Interactivity

Handwriting on the Wall Proved to be Great Customer Service

Today’s post is about a great customer service example that I experienced just yesterday.  As it was Sunday, my normal routine is to wake up and promptly go to church.  I did that even though I was bit sleepy from coming home from curling the night before at 2:30 AM…I was sort of three-quarters alert. However, I quickly woke up during the service when Pastor Bill Ankerberg told us that he was letting us out early to go write on the walls of the new entry! My own mom never allowed me to do that!

THE POWER OF SHARING

My church, Whittier Area Community Church, is finishing up a three-year building project in a month or so.  The last phase is the construction of our entry way.  This area has been walled up since Christmas so this was the first time we could walk in the space.  Over this week the walls will be painted and the floor carpeted, so our messages will be hidden from site. I guess you could say this is a new way to look at a time capsule.

But, to me, this was a wonderful example of customer service and marketing creativity. I thought it was absolutely brilliant. What a genius way for us, the congregation, to become invested in the building in a personal way. To have the ability to put our mark on this landmark and tell our friends and family about it for years to come – this experience can’t be replaced.

AN EVERLASTING MARK

Our marks are there literally until the walls come down.

For the mere cost of purchasing a few black Sharpies, over 3,000 people became connected with a project that will potentially last their lifetime. I wish I could show you the images and the words written. They were as diverse as the authors. Kids, teens, young adults and seniors all took part. There were cute “child-like” drawings, beautiful images of crosses from true artists, signatures with dates, and inspiring words.

The Author Cementing Her Words in this Interactive Marketing Experience

This opportunity was just too good to pass up. So I had to put my words to the ground.

I chose to write my words at a spot where people will enter and exit. And what did I say?

I didn’t want to use my words, but God’s. I knew His words are everlasting and well, mine don’t measure up in that same regard.

I left behind this thought.

The LORD will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.  Ps 121: 7-8

What a wonderful way to extend The Experience.

Perhaps you can apply this idea to something you are building.
