Take Me Out to the Ballgame Anytime!

Well today was another first. It was the first time I’ve ever attended a major league baseball weekday game. Look how gorgeous Angel Stadium looks!

Angels Stadium

Does it get better than that! I’ll answer that for you -Nope. And better yet…my Halos won -4 to 2 over Tampa Bay. I guess you can tell by the photo that I shot it when the groundskeepers were still out. Yup. We were there early. I attended the game as part of a group - my mom’s senior class from her church! Those seniors they love being early birds, but I didn’t mind. Is there ever a minute wasted at a ballpark? The Angels started out shaky, but they finished strong. That analogy short of mirrors me about now. I started this new adventure a bit shaky and I’m hoping to finish strong.

Sitting there in the stands I was getting that ping of excitement I sometimes get when I’m in certain environments. The ping is my personal alarm of sorts reminding me of the things I love in life or thrive under. I’ve gotten this feeling several other times in my career and it has always come when I was involved in planning an event or in the midst of a live production. I also get it when I’m at Disneyland - that place is just magical.

I was sitting there thinking it would be cool to work for a sports team again or be part of a production team. I think team is big with me. I am much better as a team player. I like working as a group and just came off of having one of the best PR teams around. It was magical there too. All cylinders hit and it was fun. And we landed big fish. The biggest. I was privileged and honored to work besides the industry’s best PR people in my last reign.

I don’t really know where this post is going. I haven’t been inspired to blog about anything in particular this week. I know I’m keeping a close eye on what’s going on with Sam Zell and his Tribune properties. I’m getting a bit “mad” about how he’s restructuring and I’m sure that post will soon be coming.

I also know that others want me to write about “inside” PR tricks and suggestions. I will do that. I also want to line up some guest commentators for you too. For as I’ve said above…honestly, this isn’t all about me. We’re a team.

Below is a very bad self-portrait of me today at the game. Those who are around me know I have this thing for snapping my own photos. If I didn’t I think I’d ever have any-at least that’s my thought for no one in my family ever has a camera except me.

As I walked around the ballpark it sort of came full circle for me. Right there in left field next to the Panda Express fast food restaurant was a sign promoting my alma mater, the University of La Verne. I thought it was a bold yet risky marketing move by them actually-sort of surprising. And even before that, as I was walking into the stadium I bumped into another alumnus Alex Gallardo who’s a LA Times senior sports photographer. He was there to shoot the game -and it’s always fun to bump into college buddies.

But, I guess because of the La Verne connections today, I’m supposed to talk about what I wanted to be when I graduated from college and since it is graduation time around these California parts-this walk down memory lane fits. I went into college and left college hoping to be a sportscaster. Too funny, huh. I sort of fell into public relations and stayed there ever since. I did intern in the sports department for KABC after college. It was there that I realized being an on-air reporter wasn’t for me. But it was there that I found out that I loved writing what the commentators said. That gave me a ping.

I love sports and the people involved with them. My time spent with Fox Sports’ executives and on-air talent were among the best times of my career. It’s a great field. Loads of fun. And usually always positive news to write about. And you get to spend lots of time at ballparks. Again…does it get any better than that.

I promise to write soon. Ah, that is after I attend to some household chores. E-Gadz.

…buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks…and don’t forget the hot dogs too!
